Hard to believe it's been five years since I first opened my Gold IRA. I remember being so nervous about it, you know? As a nurse living in Seattle, I'd always just done the standard 401k/roth thing, but with all the economic uncertainty back then, I really wanted to diversify and add something tangible. I started pretty small, just about $60k to begin with, mostly physical gold coins. Honestly, my main goal was just security for retirement, not necessarily massive gains, but I've been pleasantly surprised.
I've actually seen my portfolio grow to around $85k now, which isn't a get-rich-quick story, but it's consistent, and it feels a lot more stable than some of my tech stocks have been lately! That sense of security is really what I was after. It's funny, a few of my colleagues thought I was a bit crazy for putting money into "old fashioned" gold, but I feel like I'm the one sleeping easier these days. It also forced me to really think about the tax implications down the line, especially because I plan to be able to live off this in retirement. I actually found that Tax Calculator tool on Gold IRA Blueprint super helpful for figuring out what I might be looking at.
I've made a few small additions here and there over the years, mostly when I had some extra cash from overtime or a bonus, sticking with mostly physical gold. Haven't really ventured into silver much yet, but I'm always open to learning more. Overall, no regrets about this decision. It feels good to have that physical asset guarding my retirement nest egg, especially with inflation being what it is.
Anyone else have similar experiences after several years with their gold IRA? What kind of returns have you been seeing, or what were your initial goals when you started?
