5 years in with my Gold IRA - current thoughts and returns after riding that tech wave down

Hard to believe it's been five years since I first rolled a chunk of my old 401k into a Gold IRA. Was working at a pre-IPO startup back then, riding high on stock options, but even then, something in my gut just said "diversify." My financial advisor (the good one, not the firm's guy who kept pushing their proprietary funds) basically told me I was crazy to consider physical metals. Figured it was worth the risk. The initial rollover was about $200k, mostly from some vested stock that I’d been holding onto and wasn't doing much.
Fast forward to today, after getting out of tech a couple of years ago and watching the market do its thing, I'm genuinely relieved I made that move. My Gold IRA holdings are up about 35% overall, which isn't going to make me a billionaire overnight, but it's a hell of a lot better than some of the paper losses I've seen in other parts of my portfolio. The peace of mind, frankly, has been priceless. Especially living in SF, where everything feels incredibly precarious all the time, having a tangible asset that isn't connected to the latest startup valuation or interest rate hike is just… grounding.
I know a lot of people criticize precious metals for not having dividend yields or being "dead money," but for me, it was always about capital preservation and a hedge against inflation, especially with all the money printing we’ve seen. The liquidity isn't as good as stocks, obviously, but I don't need instant access to this portion of my retirement savings. It's truly a long-term play. Now that I’m rebalancing the rest of my portfolio, I’m even considering adding a bit more since I see some stability moving forward.
Has anyone else here done a longer-term analysis on their Gold IRA performance? What kind of returns are you seeing, especially if you rolled over a significant amount? Also, for anyone on the fence about whether they even qualify for a Gold IRA, I remember using a pretty handy tool called an Eligibility Checker – https://eligibility.goldirablueprint.com/. Might be useful for anyone looking to understand their options before committing to a call with an advisor. What are your thoughts on adding silver to the mix now, or sticking purely with gold?
