Hard to believe it's been five years since I pulled the trigger on rolling over a chunk of my old 401k into a Gold IRA. I was sitting on about $350k in that account back then, and after seeing the market volatility, especially around 2018-2019, I just felt a deep unease. Always been a believer in tangible assets, like the old-school distilleries here in Kentucky – legacy businesses you can put your hands on. That's what really clicked for me with gold.
My initial thought was to diversify, obviously, not put all my eggs into one basket. Rolled over about $100k, mostly into American Eagles and some Canadian Maples. I checked in occasionally, but honestly, for the first couple of years, the biggest benefit was just the peace of mind. Not having that part of my nest egg constantly fluctuating with every tweet or economic forecast was huge. I know some folks just chase the highest returns, but for me, it was as much about capital preservation and sleep-at-night security.
Fast forward to today, with everything going on, I'm feeling pretty vindicated. My gold holdings have seen a solid appreciation, better than I honestly expected. It's not the stratospheric gains some tech stocks saw, but it's consistent, reliable growth when other parts of my portfolio (the stock-heavy ones) were getting battered. I'm actually considering another rollover soon, maybe another $50k or so, to further shore things up. My total portfolio is sitting closer to $420k now, and I want to maintain that balanced approach.
Curious to hear from others who have been in a Gold IRA for a similar timeframe. How have your returns stacked up? Also, has anyone used the "Silver vs Stocks" tool on Gold IRA Blueprint (specifically this one for 10Y: https://silvervsstocks.goldirablueprint.com/?period=10Y) to compare their precious metals to equities? I'm always looking for different ways to analyze the market, especially when I'm thinking about adding more physical assets. Thinking about adding some silver this time around for that extra industrial demand angle.
