5 years in - my Gold IRA rollover experience and returns

    Key Takeaways
    • I started pretty young, right after I got my first "real" job and was able to roll over an old 401k from a summer internship into a new IRA.
    • I started with about $15,000 back then, did a direct rollover, and specifically chose physical gold rather than paper assets.
    • My initial thought was just to have something tangible, a bit of a hedge against whatever crazy stuff the world throws at us.

So, I'm hitting my 5-year anniversary with my Gold IRA this month, and figured it'd be a good time to share my experience and see what others are seeing. I started pretty young, right after I got my first "real" job and was able to roll over an old 401k from a summer internship into a new IRA. I'm based in Charleston, and wanted to diversify my retirement savings beyond just stocks, especially with all the market volatility stuff happening around COVID time.

I started with about $15,000 back then, did a direct rollover, and specifically chose physical gold rather than paper assets. My initial thought was just to have something tangible, a bit of a hedge against whatever crazy stuff the world throws at us. Honestly, I didn't expect to get rich overnight, just wanted some stability. Today, that original $15k is hovering around $22,000-$23,000, depending on the daily spot price. That's a roughly 46-53% return over five years, or about 8-9% annually. Not blowing the doors off, but for a "safe" asset, I'm pretty happy with it. It definitely kept pace, and often outpaced, some of my other investments during those bumpy years.

I've been playing around with the "Silver vs Stocks" tool on Gold IRA Blueprint (specifically this link: https://silvervsstocks.goldirablueprint.com/?period=10Y) and it’s pretty interesting to see how silver has stacked up against the market over the last decade. It makes me wonder if I should have diversified into some silver within my IRA too. I only held gold. Did anyone here diversify into both gold and silver when setting up their IRA? What kind of returns are you seeing?

My overall portfolio is still pretty small, under $50k across everything, so every bit of growth helps. I'm trying to be smart about retirement planning early on. For anyone else who's been doing this for a while, how often do you rebalance your Gold IRA? Or do you just let it ride? Any regrets on not adding silver, or are you happy sticking purely with gold?

Glad to see another long-term holder sharing their experience. I'm hitting my 6-year mark here in Houston, and while the day-to-day fluctuations can be wild, the historical stability of gold in my IRA has been a fantastic ballast for my overall portfolio. I actually used the IRA Calculator at https://calculator.goldirablueprint.com/?forum when I was first considering my rollover, and it really helped solidify my decision once I saw the potential tax-deferred growth compounded over decades. The projections were surprisingly close to my actual returns, especially when factoring in inflation.

Hey, this is super timely! I'm actually coming up on my 4-year mark with my Gold IRA later this year and was just thinking about pulling my numbers together. Glad to see someone else sharing their experience. Makes me feel a bit more confident in my own choices.

Hey, congrats on the 5-year mark! That's awesome. I'm curious, when you say "rolled over your first real job" are you referring to a 401(k) or something else? Just trying to get a clearer picture of your starting point.

Hey, congrats on hitting the 5-year mark! That's awesome you got started so early. While it's great to hear your Gold IRA has performed well for you, it's also worth remembering that pretty much *everything* has gone up in the last five years. The broader market, especially tech, has seen some truly wild gains. Just food for thought that past performance isn't a guarantee and diversification across different asset classes is usually the name of the game!

Congrats on the 5-year mark! Always great to hear long-term experiences. For anyone considering it, remember to check the IRS guidelines on precious metals for IRAs – not all gold coins or bars are eligible. The IRS has pretty specific purity standards and approved refiners. A quick search for "IRS approved gold for IRA" will usually lead you to some good resources to make sure you're compliant. Helps avoid any headaches down the road!

Great thread, u/Goldbug2020! I made a similar move back in 2018, rolling over a significant chunk of my old 401k into a gold IRA. The whole process was far smoother than I expected, and frankly, looking back, the peace of mind knowing a portion of my *retirement savings* isn't solely tied to market volatility has been invaluable. The *tax advantages* were a big factor for me, being in NYC, and the performance of my *precious metals* has definitely validated the decision.

That's seriously impressive about your returns! I just started my own Gold IRA a few months ago – rolled over about $180k from my old 401k – and I'm still trying to wrap my head around the whole rebalancing aspect. Do you actively adjust your gold/silver/platinum mix, or do you just let it ride based on your initial allocation? I'm in Omaha, and it feels like everyone here either ignores their portfolio or is a super-active trader, so hearing about a more hands-off approach like yours is encouraging.

Great thread, OP! Good to hear your Gold IRA is performing well. I rolled over a portion of my 401k into a Gold IRA back in late 2019, about $150k worth, and it's been a solid hedge against inflation for me down here in Tampa. I found this really detailed article from Augusta Precious Metals on "Gold IRA Rollover Mistakes to Avoid" super helpful before I made the jump. It covered everything from custodian fees to storage options, definitely worth a read for anyone considering it.

Really appreciate you sharing your 5-year snapshot, OP! It’s such a crucial time to be looking at these alternatives. My own Gold IRA, which I rolled a mid-five-figure chunk into back in 2021 (right when inflation started making my stomach churn here in Raleigh), is mostly about stability. I'm not chasing S&P 500 gains with it, but that consistent, albeit slower, upward crawl while everything else feels like a rollercoaster? That's the peace of mind I paid for.

This is EXACTLY what I've been saying! I rolled over a portion of my 401k – roughly $60k – back in late 2019, just before all the crazy started. Living here in Little Rock, I saw the local real estate market going bonkers and knew I needed a real hedge. Honestly, I sleep so much better knowing that part of my portfolio isn't riding the stock market rollercoaster. Your 5-year outlook really validates my decision to diversify beyond just paper assets.

Great thread, u/GoldStandardDreams! Your 5-year reflection really resonated with me. I initiated my own Gold IRA rollover back in late 2019, right before all the COVID craziness hit. Like many, I was feeling increasingly uneasy with the market volatility and the sheer mountain of debt I saw accumulating globally. My portfolio was around the $350k mark then, and I moved about 25% of it into physical gold and silver, mostly American Gold Eagles and some Canadian Silver Maples. Honestly, the process was smoother than I anticipated. My advisor, who initially seemed a bit skeptical (he was still very bullish on tech then), came around once I showed him the projections I got after playing around with the IRA Calculator at Gold IRA Blueprint. I was particularly interested in the historical performance against inflation, and seeing those numbers laid out really solidified my decision. I’m based out of Lexington, KY, and I remember the delivery process for the coins to the depository felt a bit like Christmas – albeit a very secure, insured Christmas! Looking back,

Interesting to see your 5-year snapshot. I rolled over a good chunk from my old 401k to a Gold IRA back in 2018, maybe $300k, and honestly, the stability has been a godsend, especially living in Portland with all the economic weirdness we've seen. While I haven't seen the explosive growth of some tech stocks, the consistent, albeit modest, appreciation for the physical metal has allowed me to sleep a lot sounder at night, and that peace of mind is *worth* something when you're looking at retirement.

It's always great to hear success stories like yours; 5 years with those kinds of returns is fantastic. Living here in Nashville, I've seen a lot of folks get into Gold IRAs, and my experience over the last three years with a 75k portfolio has been a bit more modest, focusing on the stability aspect rather than high growth. I've found it to be a solid anchor, especially with market fluctuations, but the consistent double-digit percentages many aim for can be tough to hit year over year.

That's a fantastic write-up, really appreciate you sharing the detailed breakdown. As someone also in the Southwest, holding roughly $180k in physical gold through a Gold IRA custodian near El Paso, I'm curious if you've done any deep dives into the *liquidity* aspect. Have you looked into the process of taking distributions or selling a portion of your holdings if the need arose, and if so, how seamless (or clunky) did that seem with your chosen custodian?

    sharon_evans💰Established (100-250k)Real Investorabout 2 months ago

That's reassuring to hear, especially since I just *finally* pulled the trigger on a gold IRA myself last month. Rolled over about $180k of my old 401k sitting in some fairly stagnant funds. I'm in Tulsa, so I went with a local broker who came highly recommended. What's your take on whether to go with physical delivery vs. keeping it vaulted? Trying to wrap my head around the pros and cons for when I eventually need to start taking distributions.

Great post, really helpful to see your breakdown. I actually just hit my three-year mark with my Gold IRA, holding about $75k in a mix of coins and bars. I'm over in Albuquerque, and the peace of mind knowing I have some real assets backing my retirement savings is huge. If you're near retirement, the RMD Calculator is super helpful – it really clarified what I'd be looking at come distribution time. It took a lot of the guesswork out of my planning.

This is super helpful! I just started my Gold IRA journey about 6 months ago, rolling over a significant chunk from my old 401k – roughly $300k. I'm in Spokane and used Provident Precious Metals for the actual physical gold purchase, but for the actual IRA custodian, I went with Apmex IRA. Does anyone have experience with them, especially regarding their fees for a portfolio roughly my size? I'm still trying to get a handle on all the nuances.

@Joyce Cooper I'm with you on this, especially that pre-2020 timing! Living out here in Phoenix, I had a similar feeling of unease around that time, watching the housing market sizzle and thinking, "this can't last." I ended up rolling over about $150k from an old 401k into a Gold IRA in early 2020, literally weeks before the market took its dive. It felt like dodging a bullet. For silver fans, check out the Silver vs Stocks comparison – it really puts things into perspective over different timeframes, and I used it to solidify my own precious metals allocation strategy. While the gains haven't been as explosive as some tech stocks, the stability and peace of mind have been priceless, especially with inflation eroding purchasing power everywhere else.

@Joyce Cooper You are preaching to the choir, Joyce! I had an identical experience, though a bit north of you in Memphis. I moved about $150k of my 401k into a Gold IRA in early 2020 – literally weeks before the world went sideways. Watching the market volatility while my physical precious metals just sat there, steady and strong, was incredibly reassuring. It really solidified my belief in diversification and tangible assets.

Awesome to hear your positive experience, u/GoldGains247! I'm in Kansas City myself and did a similar 401k rollover into a gold IRA back in 2020, right when things started getting shaky. Best financial decision I've made for my retirement savings, honestly. The stability that holding physical precious metals gives, especially with the current economic uncertainty, is just invaluable, not to mention the specific tax advantages. My initial portfolio was around the $75k mark, and it's been a steady, reassuring climb ever since.

@Ruth Perez That's really helpful to hear your experience, especially hitting the three-year mark with a decent chunk invested. I've been doing a ton of research lately, trying to get my head around all the nuances of Gold IRAs, and it's good to see someone else from the "real world" with a similar investment timeframe to what I'm considering. Did you fund your Gold IRA with a direct rollover from a 401k, or was it a new contribution? I'm just north of Columbus, Ohio, and trying to decide which route makes the most sense for getting started with about $100k.

Man, this thread brings back memories. Five years ago, I was staring at my 401k statement, sweat beading on my forehead in my Vegas living room. The market was doing its usual dance, and my "diversified" portfolio felt anything but secure. I remember feeling this gripping fear that all my hard work, all those years of scrimping and saving, could just…vanish. That's when a buddy from my poker game mentioned Gold IRAs. At first, I was skeptical; I thought it was some fringe thing. But the more I looked into it, the more I saw it as a life raft. The Tax Calculator at https://tax.goldirablueprint.com/?forum was a game-changer for me – it showed me exactly how much I could save on taxes, and that was the concrete push I needed. Rolling over about $180k felt like a massive leap of faith, but now, seeing my gold holdings steadily appreciate, honestly, it's the only part of my portfolio I sleep soundly owning. The peace of mind alone has been worth

Great to see someone else sharing their Gold IRA journey. I rolled over about $180k from my old 401k into a Precious Metals IRA back in 2020, right when things started getting shaky. For me, it was more about stabilizing my portfolio than chasing huge returns, especially with the Fed printing money like it was going out of style. The process was surprisingly smooth, only took a few weeks to get everything settled with Augusta Precious Metals, and having that tangible asset diversified away from the typical stocks and bonds definitely helps me sleep better at night here in Atlanta.
