5 years in - my Gold IRA rollover experience (and phoenix heat!)

Can’t believe it’s been five years since I rolled over a good chunk of my old 401k into a Gold IRA. After 2008, I just had this nagging feeling in my gut about relying solely on paper assets, especially with all the talk about inflation and instability. I was a teacher for 30 years here in Phoenix, and while my pension is solid, I wanted something more tangible for a portion of my retirement savings. So, I took about $150k from my 401k and put it into gold and some silver through a reputable company.
My initial concern was the fees, to be honest. It felt a bit like jumping through hoops compared to just passively investing in an index fund. Storage fees, custodian fees… it added up a little, but I figured it was the cost of diversified security. Emotionally, it was a big step, moving a significant sum into physical metals. My kids thought I was a bit old-fashioned, but sometimes old-fashioned means reliable, right?
Looking back, I feel pretty good about the decision. The gold has shown some nice steady growth over the last five years, certainly outpacing what I would have gotten in a standard savings account, and it feels like a really solid hedge against the craziness we’ve seen in the broader market. I haven’t touched it, and frankly, I don’t plan to for a long, long time. It’s my "break glass in case of emergency" fund, or maybe a legacy for the grandkids.
Has anyone else in the Phoenix area, or anywhere really, been through a similar rollover? What kind of returns have you seen over the last few years? And for those who’ve held their gold for even longer, what are your thoughts on its long-term performance? Always curious to hear other perspectives from fellow investors, especially as we head into what feels like increasingly uncertain economic times.
