Just completed a rollover of a significant portion of my old 401k into a Gold IRA, and honestly, a weight has lifted. For years, sitting on that 401k was feeling increasingly... exposed. After serving over three decades, the thought of my retirement nest egg being entirely tied to paper assets and the whims of the market just didn't sit right with me. I've seen too many cycles, too many boom-and-busts, to not seek that stability. My financial advisor initially had some reservations, but after I laid out my reasoning, he understood the diversification play. Ended up moving about $750k from a diverse portfolio of stocks and bonds into physical gold and a smaller allocation to silver. The process itself was smoother than I anticipated, frankly. Took a little longer than I'd hoped, maybe 4 weeks from initiation to full funding, but the team I worked with was incredibly thorough.
I’m based out of Virginia Beach, and while my Navy pension provides a solid foundation, I wanted something tangible, something that felt like a true hedge against inflation and geopolitical instability. The idea of having a portion of my wealth in something that's held value for millennia just resonates with my disciplined, long-term approach. It's not about trying to get rich quick with gold, it's about wealth preservation and mitigating risk.
I know there are a lot of opinions out there on precious metals, but for me, this was a strategic move to secure a portion of my retirement. Anyone else here gone through a similar rollover recently? What were your motivations, and how did you feel about the process? Any surprises or things you wish you'd known beforehand?
