Just went through the full 401k to Gold IRA rollover process, and thought I'd share some insights for anyone else considering it. For context, I’m in my late 60s, retired CEO, and while my overall portfolio is in the 7-figure range (let's just say comfortably between $1M and $5M after some excellent market runs) a decent chunk was still sitting in a traditional 401k from my last company. I've always been a big believer in hard assets, especially with all the printing going on, so physical metals have been a core part of my strategy for years. The goal here was to get more of that exposure into the tax-advantaged retirement bucket.
The actual mechanics weren't nearly as complicated as I anticipated, which was a relief. I worked with Augusta Precious Metals – they were recommended by a friend down here in Palm Beach who’s also big into metals. Their team handled most of the paperwork between my old 401k administrator and the new IRA custodian. The direct rollover option was key; avoided any tax implications there. The funds transferred over, then I worked with Augusta to select specific physical gold and silver to be held in a Delaware Depository vault. I opted for a mix of American Gold Eagles and some silver rounds. The whole process, from initial contact to the metals being securely vaulted, took about three weeks. Surprisingly efficient.
My biggest takeaway is the peace of mind. Knowing a significant portion of my retirement savings is now tied to tangibles, outside of the traditional financial system, feels incredibly liberating. Especially with the current economic climate – inflation concerns are very real, and I just don't trust fiat as much as I used to. It's not about trying to get rich quick; it's about wealth preservation and diversification. I sleep better at night knowing I have that hedge.
Anyone else in South Florida (or anywhere, really) gone through this recently? What were your experiences like? Did you use a different company? Curious if folks felt the same sense of security afterwards, or if you ran into any unexpected hurdles. Always good to hear other perspectives on protecting our hard-earned capital.
