Just went through the 401k to Gold IRA rollover process myself and wanted to share my experience, and also see if others had similar timelines. I’m a nurse here in Seattle, and honestly, the thought of my retirement savings (about $80k from an old 401k) just sitting in the stock market with all the craziness going on was keeping me up at night. I really wanted some tangible assets. That’s why I decided to move a good chunk of it into a Gold IRA for some peace of mind.
I started looking into it seriously at the beginning of May. My first call with a Gold IRA company was May 5th. They walked me through everything, and I decided to go with them. The paperwork seemed pretty straightforward, but there was a bit of back and forth with my old 401k provider (a major financial institution, not going to name names but think big banks). They weren't super quick on their end to send over the funds. It felt like they dragged their feet a bit, probably hoping I’d reconsider.
From the initial call to the funds actually landing in my new Gold IRA account, it took almost exactly four weeks. The physical gold (a mix of American Gold Eagles and some Canadian Maples) then took another 5 business days to be delivered to the depository. So, all in all, about a month and a week from start to finish. I was pretty anxious during some of that waiting, especially since I was checking my old 401k balance daily and seeing it jump around. I felt a huge sense of relief once I got the confirmation that the gold was secured in my name.
My main reason for doing this was pure security for my retirement – I don't want to wake up one day and see my hard-earned savings decimated by another market crash. I'm 52, and I just can't afford that kind of risk anymore. I know some people say gold doesn't grow as much, but for me, it's about preserving what I have. Has anyone else done a similar rollover recently? Did your timeline look similar, or was it drastically different? Any surprises you ran into?
