Just wrapped up the process of moving a chunk of my old 401k into a Gold IRA, and thought I'd share my timeline and see if anyone else has had a similar experience, especially here in Idaho. I decided to roll over about $75,000 from an old employer's 401k earlier this year. My main goal was diversification and some real tangible assets – something I can see and understand, unlike some of the derivatives out there. The whole process, from the initial consultation to getting the confirmation that my gold was securely vaulted, took roughly 5 weeks from start to finish. The longest part was definitely getting the old 401k administrator to actually release the funds and send them over. It felt like pulling teeth sometimes, and I had to make a few follow-up calls.
Once the funds hit the Gold IRA custodial account, the actual purchase and allocation of the physical gold was super quick. Within a few days, I had all the documentation and confirmation. I chose a few different types of coins and bars, nothing too exotic, keeping it pretty straightforward. I'm feeling a lot better about that portion of my portfolio now, especially with all the talk about interest rate hikes and inflation.
Anyone else in the Boise area or even Idaho generally gone through a similar rollover recently? Did your timeline align with mine, or was it significantly faster/slower? Would love to hear about your experiences, especially with different custodians or gold dealers. Always looking for more local insights!
