401k to Gold IRA - my experience with the rollover and some thoughts

Just closed out my Gold IRA rollover from an old 401k a few weeks back and thought I'd share my experience for anyone else considering it. It wasn't as straightforward as some might make it sound, but definitely worth it for the peace of mind. I had a decent chunk in that old 401k, about $850k from a previous development firm I ran before going full-time into my own Aspen ventures. The market volatility lately has had me seriously re-evaluating my portfolio, especially after seeing some of my real estate projects weather the storms far better than equities.
The first hurdle was finding the right custodian. There are a lot of players out there, and frankly, some of them felt pretty greasy. I spent a solid month doing my due diligence, looking for one with a good reputation, transparent fees, and a wide selection of IRS-approved metals. Ended up going with one that had been recommended by a couple of my buddies who are also heavy metal investors. The paperwork was extensive, a real pain in the ass to be honest. Had to get a medallion signature guarantee, which meant a trip to the bank and a few hoops to jump through. Did anyone else find that part unusually archaic?
Once the paperwork was squared away, the transfer itself took about three weeks. Not bad, but I was definitely checking my account daily at that point. I opted for a mix of American Gold Eagles and some Canadian Gold Maple Leafs. Felt good to finally have that capital in something tangible, something I can actually see (virtually, at least). With my overall portfolio sitting north of $5M now, having a significant portion in physical gold feels like a smart diversification move, especially with all the talk of inflation and the global economic jitters. It's not about making a quick buck for me; it's about protecting what I've built. Is any one else here seeing similar moves in their portfolios to de-risk?
