I'm in the process of rolling over a significant chunk of my old 401k into a Gold IRA, and honestly, the timeline is making me a little antsy. I’m looking at moving about $600k – it’s a big percentage of my portfolio, and with my logistics company here in Memphis, I’m used to things moving, well, logistically and on schedule. This is a bit different.

I initiated the direct rollover with my custodian about three weeks ago. They said it would be “processed shortly” but that’s pretty vague. I’m trying to plan out my succession for the company over the next few years and having this money in gold is a key part of my long-term strategy, especially with all the talk about inflation and market volatility. I don't need access to it tomorrow, but I also don't want it sitting in transfer limbo for months.

For those of you who’ve done a 401k to Gold IRA rollover, how long did your whole process take, from initiating the request to seeing the metals actually purchased and in your account? Did you run into any unexpected delays? And on a related note, for anyone nearing retirement, have you started looking at RMDs yet? I bookmarked that RMD Calculator at Gold IRA Blueprint, seems like a good tool to keep handy.

Appreciate any insights or experiences you guys can share. Just trying to get a realistic expectation here.

Hey, I totally get the anxiety! I did a similar rollover with an old 401k last year, though not quite as big as your $600k. Mine took about 3.5 weeks from start to finish, including the liquidation of my old funds and the gold being allocated into my new IRA account. It felt like forever at the time, especially since I kept checking the status daily. Hope yours goes smoothly and quickly!

Hey, that's a decent chunk of change you're moving! When you say "logistics," are you talking about the actual physical delivery of the gold, or more about the paperwork and fund transfer part of the rollover?

Honestly, $600k is a pretty hefty sum to be moving, so I wouldn't be surprised if it takes a bit longer than what some folks are quoting here for smaller amounts. More money usually means more scrutiny and more paperwork on the institution's end. While everyone wants it to be quick, it's probably better they take their time and get it right with that much on the line, even if it's annoying in the short term.

Hey, totally get the anxiety about a big transfer like that. For a rollover of $600k, a few weeks isn't uncommon, especially if there are multiple steps or the old custodian is slow. Mine took about 3 weeks end-to-end, and it was a direct rollover from a 401k to a Gold IRA custodian.

One thing that really helped me was using a company that specializes in precious metal IRAs and has a dedicated rollover team. They often have established relationships with common 401k administrators and can sometimes push things along. Might be worth looking into if you're feeling stalled with your current provider. Good luck!

Yeah, I totally get why you'd be antsy with that much on the line. Moving $600k is no joke!

I did a similar rollover (though for a much smaller amount, about $80k) last year, and it took almost exactly 3 weeks from my initial contact to the gold actually being held in my account. The longest part was definitely the old 401k provider dragging their feet on releasing the funds. Hope yours goes smoothly, man!
