So, finally pulled the trigger and rolled over a good chunk of my old 401k into a Gold IRA. Been thinking about it for a while, especially with all the ups and downs in the market lately. Running a tourism business here in Savannah, you really feel every ripple in the economy, and let's just say the last few years have been a masterclass in uncertainty. I had about $180k sitting in a traditional 401k that felt way too exposed.
The whole process was actually smoother than I expected. I was dreading a mountain of paperwork and endless phone calls, but my custodian (chosen after way too much research) walked me through it. It was a direct rollover, so no messing with cash changing hands and accidentally triggering taxes. The funds took about three weeks to fully clear and for the gold to be purchased and allocated. It's a mix of some American Gold Eagles and Canadian Gold Maples – felt good to diversify even within the gold itself, you know?
Honestly, the biggest feeling I have now is relief. That feeling of having some genuine, tangible assets that aren't just numbers on a screen somewhere is pretty empowering. With inflation concerns always nagging and the dollar doing its thing, I sleep a little better knowing a good portion of my retirement is in something that’s historically held its value. Anyone else here feel that same sense of peace after making the jump?
One thing I'm curious about for those of you who've done this – how often do you check in on your holdings? Are you looking at spot prices daily, weekly, or just letting it ride? Also, for anyone still on the fence, I found this Gold IRA Quiz pretty useful for understanding the different options and what might fit best. It’s a good starting point if you’re trying to wrap your head around it all like I was. Love to hear your thoughts or any tips for a relatively new gold IRA owner!
