My 401k to Gold IRA Rollover - Smooth as Silk (Mostly)

Just wrapped up my latest 401k rollover to a Gold IRA and figured I’d share my experience for anyone on the fence. For background, I’ve been stacking precious metals for years, both physical and now a good chunk in this IRA. My portfolio is north of a few million, mostly in real estate and my own ventures, but I’ve always seen gold as the ultimate insurance policy. This latest chunk was about $800k I moved from an old 401k with a previous employer. Most of my previous rollovers were smaller, so I was a little nervous about moving this much capital.
My biggest concern was the direct vs. indirect rollover. With the direct, it goes straight from custodian to custodian, no drama. Indirect, they cut you a check, you have 60 days to deposit it, and that’s just too much room for error for my comfort. I've heard horror stories of people missing the deadline and getting hit with massive taxes and penalties. Thankfully, my guy at Augusta Precious Metals made sure this was a direct transfer, which was a huge relief. The whole process, once I had all my paperwork in order from my old 401k provider (who, honestly, dragged their feet a bit), took about three weeks from initiation to the metals being fully settled in the new account at the depository.
I went with Augusta again because they’ve been solid for me in the past. Their transparency on fees is a big plus, and their customer service is top-notch. Being based in Scottsdale, I even popped into their office once for a consultation on an earlier move. Always good to put a face to the name when you’re dealing with this kind of money. The actual metals I chose for this tranche were a mix of American Gold Eagles and Canadian Gold Maples – classic choices, good liquidity. Knowing I've got a significant chunk of my retirement savings diversified out of stocks and into something tangible and historically resilient gives me a lot of peace of mind, especially with all the economic uncertainty swirling around.
Anyone else here recently do a big rollover? What was your experience like? Any particular companies or depository services you’d recommend or warn against for future moves?
