My 401k to Gold IRA Rollover - A Smooth Ride, Mostly

Just wrapped up the rollover of a big chunk of my old 401k into a Gold IRA, and honestly, it was smoother than I expected. For years after I retired from the Street, I kept my 401k just sitting there, mostly in index funds. It did well enough, but with all the volatility lately, and turning 70 this year, I really wanted to shore up my portfolio with something tangible. We're talking about close to a $750,000 transfer, so it wasn't a small decision.
My biggest concern was the tax implications and any potential penalties, but the custodian I went with (Mid-Manhattan Gold & Silver, if anyone's curious) walked me through the direct rollover process beautifully. No distribution, no withholding, just a straight transfer from the old 401k administrator to the new IRA custodian. The biggest hiccup was actually just getting the old 401k administrator to send over the paperwork in a timely fashion. Had to make a few follow-up calls, which, frankly, was a bit of a nuisance. But once that was done, everything else moved pretty quickly.
I opted for mostly American Gold Eagles and some Canadian Gold Maple Leafs for the bulk of it. The allocation for my metals holdings is now well over 40% of my total portfolio, which some folks might call aggressive, but it feels right for me. Living here in New York, you see all sorts of economic shifts, and I've always believed in having a bedrock when things get shaky. The peace of mind alone is worth it.
Anyone else here recently go through a similar rollover, especially with a larger amount? What were your biggest takeaways or challenges? Always interested to hear other perspectives on navigating these financial waters.
