Just wrapped up my 401k rollover into a Gold IRA and wanted to share my experience for anyone else thinking about it. Been managing a pretty good book here in Greenwich for a while, so I’m all about diversification, especially with the way things have been looking macro-wise. My personal portfolio is comfortably in the 7-figure range, north of $3M last I checked, and I felt I was a bit too exposed to just paper assets, even with my hedge fund plays.
The process itself was surprisingly straightforward. I had about $750k sitting in an old 401k from a previous gig that wasn’t doing much for me. Found a solid custodian – did my homework on fees and storage options like a hawk – and honestly, their team made it pretty painless. The longest part was probably getting the old 401k administrator to cough up the funds without a fuss. Took about three weeks from first contact to the actual transfer hitting the new account and then another week for the gold to be purchased and allocated. I went with a mix of American Gold Eagles and some Canadian Maples, roughly 80/20 split. Figured the Eagles have good liquidity if I ever need to offload a portion quickly.
My biggest concern going in was the tax implications, but since it was a direct rollover, no taxable event, which was obviously ideal. The custodian walked me through all the documentation and even helped with the forms for the previous 401k. I’m thinking about rolling over a smaller portion of my current 401k next year, maybe another half mil, just to further solidify that inflation hedge. Anyone else here done multiple rollovers or moved a substantial chunk over?
Emotionally, it feels good. There’s something tangible about knowing a portion of my retirement is backed by physical gold, especially with all the talk of de-dollarization and global instability. It's a small percentage of my total wealth, probably 5-8% after this rollover, but it’s a bedrock asset. What are others' thoughts on the appropriate allocation percentage for gold in a diversified portfolio for someone at this stage? Always keen to hear different perspectives.
